A contest for Anti-Bullying Month!

October is Anti-Bullying month.  Bullying takes its toll on young people, often leading to severe consequences.  During the month of October, students will be hearing about the effects of bullying, the forms of bullying which are prevalent in today’s society, and what they can do to help the problem.

Please join in our Anti-Bullying contest.  There are four different contests in which you can compete:

  • Essay contest
  • Poetry
  • Slogan
  • Art poster

Rules for the contests:

Essay ContestWrite an essay of any length in which you discuss your thoughts regarding bullying.  You can take the topic in any direction you wish – why bullying is wrong, examples of bullying, what can be done about bullying, your philosophy/experiences with bullying, etc.  There is no specific focus which must be covered in your essay.  Essays should be typed double-spaced on one side of the paper.  Please put your name in the upper right hand corner of the essay.

PoetryWrite a poem about bullying.  The poem can be in any poetic format that you wish.  There are no length requirements.  Poems should be typed on one side of the paper.  Please put your name in the upper right hand corner of the poem.

SloganCome up with your own personal slogan to combat bullying.  Please be sure it is original.  Slogans may be typed or hand written.  Please put your name in the upper right hand corner of the paper.

Art posterDesign a poster which expresses your thoughts about bullying.  The poster can be hand drawn, computer generated, or may use pictures.  It can consist of just words or can be a combination of words and pictures.

Any entries will be judged on originality, content, creativity and the ability to present a cohesive message about bullying.  All entries are due to Mrs. Filios in the Main Office no later than Thursday, October 31.  A judging panel will select top winners in each category; all entries will be recognized.  If you have any questions, see Mrs. Filios in the Main Office.

Save the Date! October 11, 1 – 4 p.m. Silent Basket Auction and Walk-a-Thon!

Save the Date! October 11, 1 – 4 p.m. Silent Basket Auction and Walk-a-Thon!

What is a Walk-a-Thon?

A walk-a-thon is a fundraiser. A ¼ mile track will be set at the school. The students are responsible to ask friends and family to sponsor them for walking laps. For each lap walked, the student earns a donation to the school. Students are responsible for collecting and bringing the money back to the school. Donations are either paid on a per-lap basis or a flat donation. Donations can be made by check or PayPal.

Checks: should be made out to the MSASCPTO.

PayPal: Use the button below to donate.

PayPal: Donate Now

How to plan: Take the afternoon off and plan to volunteer or watch the students walk/jog.

What to bring: blanket, ice chest, sun umbrella, sun block, hat, and your checkbook 🙂

How is the Magnolia Walk-a-Thon different from other Walk-a-Thons?

Magnolia Science Academy Santa Clara PTO will be implementing the best in lap counting technology. We are using a system called Orbiter which uses a RFID reader and smart chips placed in student bibs to manage the number of laps each student walks. This system will provide us with the details as to which class walked the most and who individually has walked the most laps.

What is a Silent Auction?

A silent auction is similar to a live auction, except the bids are placed on paper. When you arrive at the auction, go to the registration table to get a number. (The number is how you bid anonymously). The Magnolia Silent Auction will be held inside the cafeteria on two long tables. Twenty baskets, each with a theme prepared by the parents and teachers will be auctioned. You will see an itemized list of every item in the basket. Each basket will have a paper with lines on it, and a minimum bid. If you would like to bid on the basket, place your number under the last bid, and wait . . . . to see if you are the highest bidder. You will need to return to your basket periodically to check to know how high the bids are and bid again if you are outbid.

What is a Themed Basket?

The Silent Auction will include 20 themed baskets hosted by each classroom. Each homeroom teacher will be collecting the items donated by parents. A parent from each homeroom will prepare an itemized list of what is in the basket. On auction day, each basket will be auctioned to the highest bidder. MSASC PTO will accept check, cash, or PayPal on the day of the event.

Prizes:

Prizes will include a ticket to Great America’s’ Halloween Haunt for the boy and girl who earns the most money in each grade. A ticket to Jump Sky High will be awarded to the boy and girl student who walks the most laps, and a pizza party will be awarded to the class with the most money earned, and the class with the most laps walked/jogged. Every student who returns a pledge sheet  to their homeroom teacher will receive a free dress pass.
