A contest for Anti-Bullying Month!

October is Anti-Bullying month.  Bullying takes its toll on young people, often leading to severe consequences.  During the month of October, students will be hearing about the effects of bullying, the forms of bullying which are prevalent in today’s society, and what they can do to help the problem.

Please join in our Anti-Bullying contest.  There are four different contests in which you can compete:

  • Essay contest
  • Poetry
  • Slogan
  • Art poster

Rules for the contests:

Essay ContestWrite an essay of any length in which you discuss your thoughts regarding bullying.  You can take the topic in any direction you wish – why bullying is wrong, examples of bullying, what can be done about bullying, your philosophy/experiences with bullying, etc.  There is no specific focus which must be covered in your essay.  Essays should be typed double-spaced on one side of the paper.  Please put your name in the upper right hand corner of the essay.

PoetryWrite a poem about bullying.  The poem can be in any poetic format that you wish.  There are no length requirements.  Poems should be typed on one side of the paper.  Please put your name in the upper right hand corner of the poem.

SloganCome up with your own personal slogan to combat bullying.  Please be sure it is original.  Slogans may be typed or hand written.  Please put your name in the upper right hand corner of the paper.

Art posterDesign a poster which expresses your thoughts about bullying.  The poster can be hand drawn, computer generated, or may use pictures.  It can consist of just words or can be a combination of words and pictures.

Any entries will be judged on originality, content, creativity and the ability to present a cohesive message about bullying.  All entries are due to Mrs. Filios in the Main Office no later than Thursday, October 31.  A judging panel will select top winners in each category; all entries will be recognized.  If you have any questions, see Mrs. Filios in the Main Office.

Raising bigger bucks for the Walk-a-thon!

The Magnolia 2013 Walk-a-thon is 2 weeks away. Your student’s fundraising should have picked up steam by now. If not, now’s the time to start.

A good approach is to start with your neighbors. Once your student has practiced their pitch, walk around with them to the neighbor’s homes. Wait for them as they approach the neighbors & convince them on why they need the money. Remember the 3 C’s: Charm (aka politeness & a smile) and Conviction (you believe in what you’re selling), will Convert (make them buy in to your fundraising) most people!

Secondly, approach local businesses. Some of them may be willing to sponsor the student while they walk, as a flat pledge or a per lap contribution. They may make in-kind contributions.

Approach friends & family. They’re a sure shot, so make sure to talk to uncles and aunts and grandparents, not just mom and dad!

Count all the loose coins, paper money and checks. That’s a respectable total. Wait! You’re not done yet. Find the person in your family or friends who works for a company with a Matching Gifts program. Ask them to submit your donation money through that program. An easy way to double your money and bring in bigger bucks for the school 🙂
