Summer break | Photos| Teachers need HELP this weekend

Summer’s here! I hope the children (and their parents) are enjoying the start of their break. Let the PTO know what interesting things you all are doing this summer (with clear photos)- we’d love to post student activities on our Facebook (Click here) and our website (Click here). Please take a minute to ‘Like’ the FB page and ‘Follow’ the blog, if you’re not already doing so. The Eighth Grade Graduation photos will be posted there in the next week or so.

Meanwhile, teachers are hard at work packing up for the move to the new facility. They’re looking for some parental help this weekend and, as usual, I’m sure our parents will step up and be happy to help 🙂

PTO ELECTION time! Forms included

Link to PTO Board Nomination Form: http://goo.gl/forms/EJaaOiUVRw

Hello Magnolians,

As the 2014-15 school year draws to an end, it is time to start preparing for next years school programs and activities.

We are looking for nominations for the following PTO Board positions; President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Auditor. The current PTO board members’ term concludes on May 31, 2015. With the MSA-SC PTO infrastructure already in place, we are looking for parents to step up and move us forward next year with the responsibility of enriching the lives of our children and contributing to the quality education they deserve. In accordance with By-laws of the MSA-SC  PTO the nomination committee is soliciting members for each PTO board position. The nominees should represent parents with interests’ experience and expertise with the position nominated and show a strong commitment to the purpose of the PTO.

You may nominate yourself or someone you think will honorably represent the position. Brief job descriptions for each position are included in the Nomination Form. Feel free to contact a current board member for additional information. The new board members will be selected from nominations elicited from the general membership. Additionally Committee heads and volunteer members are needed.

QUALIFICATIONS: The nomination process will be open to anyone who is a current parent in MSA-SC at the time when school re-opens for academic year 2015-16. If appointed, board members must comply with the approved by-laws. Current Board members will help you learn ‘on the job’ as they transition out.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: From first day of school to last day of school of academic year 2015-16

NOMINATION FORMS: Any MSA-SC parent may nominate a person or persons, including him or herself. Click the form link below to submit online. There will also be paper forms available at the Thursday April 30 meeting.

Why get involved? Research show that parental involvement affects a child’s life positively. Parent involvement is most effective when a true partnership exists between schools and families. The PTO Board works as a liaison between the parents, the teachers and the school to build that partnership, ultimately benefiting each child in the school.

Welcome back | Round-up of Movie screening + New charter petition hearing

Welcome back to school! Hope you all had a great President’s Week 🙂

Movie Screening of ‘Waiting for “Superman”‘

We had a very interesting  screening of ‘Waiting for “Superman”‘ on Friday, February 13th. It was informative and inspiring to see how people and organizations are working to fix lacunae in the American educational system. Young children and parents with dreams were waiting for lotteries to get into charter schools which could potentially change their lives. The students in MSA-SC could imagine themselves in those shoes! Good schools can literally change the entire direction your life will take as you grow up to adulthood and beyond.

Thank you to all the parents who brought snacks and food. It was much appreciated!

New charter petition hearing

Many parents, staff and one student, Aaryan G., spoke at the new charter petition hearing for STEM Academy at the Santa Clara County Office of Education on Wednesday , February 18th. Thank you to those who came out to show their support. The  next meeting in March will also be important. Please put it on your calendars.

Fitness, food & fundraising= fun! Walk-a-thon day today!

Walk-a-thon day today! It promises to be a beautiful autumn California day! Fitness, food & fundraising make for a fun event. Come support the students as they run and walk to help the school and the student community.IMG_0893.JPG

Walk-a-thon 2014 update: Pledges| Prizes|Participate

Walk-a-thon 2014 is coming up soon on Friday, November 21 from 1- 4pm. Exciting indeed! We look forward to the parents’ presence at the event to support and cheer on the students. There will be food and snacks available for purchase.

Pledge Forms

Pledge Forms were sent home with the students some time back. If misplaced, the Pledge Form can be printed by Clicking Here. All money should be turned in by December 1st or earlier. If paying through Paypal to the PTO, please add a note about the child’s name & grade and that the money is for the Walk-a-thon Pledge. For questions we have received on the minimum donation, may we suggest $100 or more per child. If children would like to request their neighbors to support their efforts in the walk-a-thon, please have them always walk with an adult when knocking door to door. Family & holiday parties can be another good venue to convince prospective donors on how their donations can benefit the student’s school and the students themselves. Money raised goes to science and technology equipment & supplies, arts programs, to help teachers etc.

IMP: Don’t forget to ask if your (or the student’s uncle/ aunt/ other family/ friends’) employer matches donations. This is a way to double the money raised by the student. The PTO is a 501 (c) (3) organization and therefore an eligible non-profit for corporate matching programs.

Prizes

This year, the students can look forward to some exciting prizes. The top fundraiser in the school will win an XBox One! Other prizes include tablets etc. The students with the most number of laps completed will also get great prizes, tickets to fun places etc.

Microsoft's XBox One

XBox One

2 classes will get Pizza Parties: (1) the class which raises the most money and (2) the class whose students walk the most laps together.

As usual, we could never do this without the support of our parents. Please Click here to sign-up to volunteer. We also need some canopies as loaners: Click here to sign-up. Thank you in advance!

Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy.  You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.  ~Author Unknown

Many of the new students & parents had questions about the event. To give the new (and old) Magnolians an idea of what’s in store for them, here’s an overview:

A fabulous BBQ shows the school spirit

We had a wonderful Back to School BBQ! Thank you to all the people who attended & a special thank you to all the volunteers!! We couldn’t have done it without you…

Watch out for some pics coming soon.

Today’s Back to School Welcome BBQ Day, 2-4 pm

Dear Magnolians,

The countdown has ended and the BBQ day is here! Look forward to seeing you at school at 2 pm.

Just like going on a picnic or to the beach, don’t forget to get your sun gear (sunhats, sunscreen etc.) and any folding chairs, picnic blankets etc. Children (and adults!) are also welcome to get Frisbees, volleyball, badminton, horseshoes sets.

This promises to be a FUN day! See you soon.

MSA-SC volunteers: you humble, uplift and inspire us!

To all the volunteers, the special people who made the 2013 MSA-SC Walk-a-thon possible, a big thank you from the extended MSA-SC community. You are the reason the event was a big success. Tom Brokaw said: “It’s easy to make a buck.  It’s a lot tougher to make a difference.” He was definitely spot-on. You all went the extra mile and made that difference in your child’s life. Remember, volunteering is how YOU can take action to change YOUR world.

You are truly appreciated by MSA-SC PTO, staff and the student community. According to William Arthur Ward, “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it. “ Well, consider our gratitude wrapped up with bows and ribbons and delivered to you. Thank you for all the hard work that you all put in; hours and hours of sweat, planning, executing and generally working to make the event a success. You humble, uplift and inspire us all! “Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless“, said Sherry Anderson.

Walk-a-thon Volunteers: all smiles at the end of the event

So, a BIG THANK YOU to all of you! If we missed your name, please accept our apologies for our oversight and let us know so we can add your name.
