Hello Magnolians,

As the 2014-15 school year draws to an end, it is time to start preparing for next years school programs and activities.

We are looking for nominations for the following PTO Board positions; President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Auditor. The current PTO board members’ term concludes on May 31, 2015. With the MSA-SC PTO infrastructure already in place, we are looking for parents to step up and move us forward next year with the responsibility of enriching the lives of our children and contributing to the quality education they deserve. In accordance with By-laws of the MSA-SC  PTO the nomination committee is soliciting members for each PTO board position. The nominees should represent parents with interests’ experience and expertise with the position nominated and show a strong commitment to the purpose of the PTO.

You may nominate yourself or someone you think will honorably represent the position. Brief job descriptions for each position are included in the Nomination Form. Feel free to contact a current board member for additional information. The new board members will be selected from nominations elicited from the general membership. Additionally Committee heads and volunteer members are needed.

QUALIFICATIONS: The nomination process will be open to anyone who is a current parent in MSA-SC at the time when school re-opens for academic year 2015-16. If appointed, board members must comply with the approved by-laws. Current Board members will help you learn ‘on the job’ as they transition out.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: From first day of school to last day of school of academic year 2015-16

Why get involved? Research show that parental involvement affects a child’s life positively. Parent involvement is most effective when a true partnership exists between schools and families. The PTO Board works as a liaison between the parents, the teachers and the school to build that partnership, ultimately benefiting each child in the school.

REMINDER: SCUSD Board Meeting TONIGHT| The students & the school need YOU!

Time to wade out into the breach again. MSA-SC community members, thank you for your support in trying to keep the school and the community intact, alive and existing. Well, the time is here again! We invite you to come stand with all of us, together, to show our solidarity. Again, every person, parent, student, teacher who shows up does make a difference!

Save MSA-SC: SIGN and SHARE Change.org PETITION

It was inspiring and humbling to see your support for your school at the SCCOE board meeting a couple of days ago. 300+ MSA-SC students, parents and teachers turned out to show their solidarity and to urge elected officials to find a solution to the situation facing us: closure of the school. It was this show of community spirit which made the SCCOE board members urge the SCUSD to consider the ‘human factor’ in the situation while considering the school closure- the human factor which involves a life changing school closure for ~500 students, their parents and staff.

We are asking for a one year school lease extension. The SCUSD plans to leave the campus empty for the next year- we are urging them to let our students stay! Please sign our Change.org PETITION and share it with your whole friend circle, your extended family, everybody you know! It doesn’t matter if they are local or not, if they believe in EDUCATION and CHOICES, then it is an easy decision to sign our Petition.

We’ve come so far together, let’s continue this journey to make our children’s lives better!

Thank you for reading, signing and sharing with as many people as you can via email, facebook, Twitter and other social media.

MSASC students and parents wait at a SCCOE board meeting

IMP: SCCOE Meeting TONIGHT at 7 pm | Show YOUR Support!

Thank you for your presence at the SCUSD board meeting last week. More than 100 students and parents showed up and stayed to support MSA-SC. It was a wonderful feeling , especially for the children who spoke about their love for MSA-SC and how they have grown in confidence and knowledge while in the school. Listening to them brought a tear to the eye and a lump to many people’s throats.

WE need YOU to show up again tonight at the SCCOE (Santa Clara County Office of Education).  The new charter is the ONLY item on the agenda and we should flood the room before they start deliberating on it. Thanks to the SCCOE board which agreed to convene this special meeting for us. Let us NOT waste this special opportunity! The SCCOE needs to see that our school community is committed, not just the staff and 5-6 parents. Like I said last week, if we stand TOGETHER, we can move mountains (or at least do our best to). Please rally around the school again. I hope to see 200 people tonight at 7 pm!!!

Nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

IMP: SCUSD meeting tonight- Show YOUR support!

It was wonderful to see the parents and students at our Rally yesterday! We are getting the word out about the need to SOS (Save Our School)! Working together, we hope to change the future for all our nearly 500 students, their parents, staff and the whole extended school community.

Students and parents, we need that same outpouring of support TONIGHT! Please come stand together in solidarity at the SCUSD meeting tonight. This will hopefully show the District that the parents and students are united, that they want Magnolia to remain open.

We are asking the District to extend the lease for 1 more year. Let’s show up, be positive, be polite but ask for them to consider our students, our children. This is the opportunity for us to act, we can not let it slide. Everyone is depending on each other- no one can say that I’m only ONE person, what does it matter if I don’t show up? It MATTERS-it matters to show the District the STRENGTH of our community, the NEED of our community, the HOPES of our children! So come tonight and act to change the future.

TOGETHER WE CAN!

REMINDER: Save Our School Rally, tomorrow, 3:15 pm + SCCOE Board meeting at 5 pm

We need your support, school community members and others concerned with more, not less, educational choices for children. Please stand with us as the parents, students and staff battle together to enable nearly 500 middle and high school MSA-SC students attend their school next academic year. A Save Our School Rally will be held TOMORROW to request extension of the current school for another academic year. At the moment, Santa Clara Unified School District (SCUSD) would like MSA-SC to leave the school facilities which would then be vacant for a year, wherein  not only will SCUSD  lose nearly half a million dollars in rental income, but also leave the current MSA-SC students struggling to find another school with high quality education!

The direction in which education starts a man will determine his future in life.” – Plato

Working together, we can change the lives of ~500 students positively!

What: Save Our School Rally

When: March 4th, 2015, at 3:15 pm

Where: MSA-SC, 2720 Sonoma Place, Santa Clara, CA, 95051 (Google Maps)

Subsequent to the Save Our School Rally at the school, please attend the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) meeting at 5 pm TOMORROW to urge the SCCOE to reconsider allowing deliberation on the alternative charter (STEM Academy) petition before March 15 so as to allow the Request for Facilities under Prop 39 to meet the March 15 deadline. Considering the petition after March 15 (the current date is March 18) will negate the charter’s Facilities petition deadline under Prop 39, not allow the school to open for academic year 2015- 16 and negatively impact close to 500 students.

Again, we look forward to your support! Let’s go and build some bridges; let the children come first as we (staff and parents and MSASCPTO) work together with SCCOE and SCUSD.

TODAY: Save Our School (SOS) PROTEST at 2 pm

What: Save Our School (SOS) PROTEST
Where: Outside the school
When: At the time you pick-up your child, TODAY Friday, Feb. 27 at 2 pm.

Please put aside some of your time to speak up for your child and your school by participating in the Protest. On the school premises, at pick-up time, it is super convenient, too.

Also, take a minute in the morning to call Darcie Green, Board President, County Office of Education at (408) 453-6540 or email her (darcie_green@sccoe.org) to politely request her to add our Facilities Request to the Board Agenda for the March 4th meeting. Deadline to add an item to the agenda for the March 4th meeting is TODAY Friday Feb. 27 by 5 pm. If the date can not get changed from the Mar 18 to the March 4th meeting, we are in the position of losing the Request for Facilities i.e the School premises. Together, let’s make the Date change happen!

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”, said Nelson Mandela and here we have the opportunity to change our children’s lives and futures. So, let’s step up to the plate and make that change!

Thank you in anticipation,
MSA-SC PTO

Info from Mr. Ak:

Dear Parents,
The county board has scheduled the decision for the STEM Academy charter petition for March 18th. As you are aware, along with the charter petition, we have applied for Prop 39 facilities, and unless we have a our charter approved by March 15, we will not qualify for facilities. Thus, a decision on the petition rendered after March 15th will make it impossible to open the STEM Academy for the 2015-16 school year.
I have asked the county board and staff to reschedule the decision for their March 4th meeting but have not received any positive response yet.
The agenda has to be posted by 5 pm Friday, so you may want to contact the board president and ask her to reconsider the agenda for next weeks meeting.
Her contact information is below:

Welcome back | Round-up of Movie screening + New charter petition hearing

Welcome back to school! Hope you all had a great President’s Week 🙂

Movie Screening of ‘Waiting for “Superman”‘

We had a very interesting  screening of ‘Waiting for “Superman”‘ on Friday, February 13th. It was informative and inspiring to see how people and organizations are working to fix lacunae in the American educational system. Young children and parents with dreams were waiting for lotteries to get into charter schools which could potentially change their lives. The students in MSA-SC could imagine themselves in those shoes! Good schools can literally change the entire direction your life will take as you grow up to adulthood and beyond.

Thank you to all the parents who brought snacks and food. It was much appreciated!

New charter petition hearing

Many parents, staff and one student, Aaryan G., spoke at the new charter petition hearing for STEM Academy at the Santa Clara County Office of Education on Wednesday , February 18th. Thank you to those who came out to show their support. The  next meeting in March will also be important. Please put it on your calendars.

Walk-a-thon 2014 update: Pledges| Prizes|Participate

Walk-a-thon 2014 is coming up soon on Friday, November 21 from 1- 4pm. Exciting indeed! We look forward to the parents’ presence at the event to support and cheer on the students. There will be food and snacks available for purchase.

Pledge Forms

Pledge Forms were sent home with the students some time back. If misplaced, the Pledge Form can be printed by Clicking Here. All money should be turned in by December 1st or earlier. If paying through Paypal to the PTO, please add a note about the child’s name & grade and that the money is for the Walk-a-thon Pledge. For questions we have received on the minimum donation, may we suggest $100 or more per child. If children would like to request their neighbors to support their efforts in the walk-a-thon, please have them always walk with an adult when knocking door to door. Family & holiday parties can be another good venue to convince prospective donors on how their donations can benefit the student’s school and the students themselves. Money raised goes to science and technology equipment & supplies, arts programs, to help teachers etc.

IMP: Don’t forget to ask if your (or the student’s uncle/ aunt/ other family/ friends’) employer matches donations. This is a way to double the money raised by the student. The PTO is a 501 (c) (3) organization and therefore an eligible non-profit for corporate matching programs.

Prizes

This year, the students can look forward to some exciting prizes. The top fundraiser in the school will win an XBox One! Other prizes include tablets etc. The students with the most number of laps completed will also get great prizes, tickets to fun places etc.

Microsoft's XBox One

XBox One

2 classes will get Pizza Parties: (1) the class which raises the most money and (2) the class whose students walk the most laps together.

As usual, we could never do this without the support of our parents. Please Click here to sign-up to volunteer. We also need some canopies as loaners: Click here to sign-up. Thank you in advance!
