Magnolia Science Academy PTO Walk-a-thon: STEM Charter School First in Silicon Valley to Use RFID Timing Technology
Mayor Jamie Matthews & Ro Khanna Among Guests
Santa Clara, CA– Magnolia Science Academy-Santa Clara PTO will be hosting a high tech Walk-a-thon on Friday, October 11, 2013 at the MSA-SC school grounds at 2720 Sonoma Place, Santa Clara.
With an event kick-off by Ro Khanna, lawyer, author, ex-Obama administration official and politician, the Walk-a-thon involves 500+ middle and high school students walking to raise money for their school. Wearing bibs more commonly seen in large sports events, the MSASC students’ laps will be tracked in real time while they walk to raise money. Ready Set Go LLC, a certified Orbiter timer, will be on site, using a RFID reader and smart chips, to time and track results. Santa Clara Mayor, Jamie L. Matthews will speak a few words to bring the event to a close.
The Walk-a-thon starts at 1 pm and ends at 4 pm. Kick-off will be at 1:15 pm. An online + silent auction (http://www.magnoliafunrun.com/) is also being held to fundraise for school programs. Among other fun items, a signed San Jose Sharks puck and Byington Vineyard wine tasting and tours will be up for grabs.
“This is our first year holding this walk-a-thon and we want to excite and nurture the spirit of volunteerism in the school community,” said Sanjeev Gautam, MSA-SC PTO President. “With the students’ participation and their parents’ support, we hope to reach our fundraising goals.”
Prizes will be awarded for the student with highest pledge money raised, top girl and boy earner per grade, top boy and girl walker per grade, class with the most pledge money raised, class with the most laps walked etc.
“This event serves as not only a fundraiser, but a collaborative effort that has brought our school community together,” said Tiffany Anderson, the Event Chair.
